The Department of Radiology has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer- Senior to join their team.

POSITION PURPOSE

The Research Scientist/Engineer- Senior provides direct oversight and coordination of complex research protocols for multiple federally funded research projects coordinated across multiple clinical sites as well as administrative and operations for the multidisciplinary research group, the UW Clinical Learning, Evidence, And Research Center (CLEAR). This position reports directly to the Principal Investigator and Department Administrator. Research priorities include work in low back pain and lumbar imaging but extends to all musculoskeletal conditions. The Research Scientist/Engineer- Senior will oversee several research studies including designing studies, developing methodology, supervision of research staff, managing data, interacting with biostatisticians, bioinformatics, and other health services researchers for manuscript writing.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

(Other duties may be assigned to meet business needs.)

--- Responsible for the development and implementation of clinical research protocols.
--- Significant contributor in all aspects of research development: study design, grant writing, protocol development and implementation across multiple sites, and manuscript development for the dissemination of research findings.
--- Responsible for understanding and implementing research regulatory compliance guidelines including human subjects protections, data privacy and security, and fiscal guidelines to operate research projects day-to-day
--- Management of multiple research grants including budgeting, research related expenditures, subcontracts with various other academic medical centers, etc.
--- Serve as the center contact of operations for the UW CLEAR Center, providing administrative oversight for all aspects of the Center.

Research Project Design, Development & Execution (70%)
--- Identify & define problems/gaps in existing projects and implement solutions for current and future projects
--- Design the phases of research projects including the development of scientific questions, data to be collected, regulatory compliance as it relates to the overall project, and operational oversight for implementation
--- Prepare and assemble human subjects related documentation for approval across multiple projects
--- Oversee data collection and verification as well as report writing and interpretation of research data
--- Manage regulatory aspects (e.g. data use agreements, institutional review board, human subjects protection) of Center and projects Provide operational oversight for on-going research Track expenditures and manage budgets in concert with departmental grants management team Coordinate and participate in discussions with multidisciplinary (clinicians, epidemiologists, biostatisticians, biomedical informaticians, health economists, etc.) research teams to review data collection methods, perform data cleaning, interpret data and assemble reports, and discuss methods of analysis

Grants (20%)
--- Write in the writing/reviewing of portions of research proposals
--- Review and assemble various sections of proposals from multiple investigators into a single
--- proposal for submission to extramural funding agencies (e.g. NIH, AHRQ, PCORI).

Manuscripts and Presentations (5%)
--- Review and edit scientific manuscripts in preparation for submission to peer-reviewed and other journals
--- Assemble content for scientific presentations and project updates

Supervisory Responsibilities (5%)
--- Responsible for training, performance monitoring, and supervision of research and
--- administrative staff

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

--- Master's in clinically-related, public health or research field.
--- 8 or more years of significant clinical research experience, including 2+ years of experience with grant preparation/writing and management including coordinator

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

--- PhD in clinically-related, public health or research field.
--- Direct supervisory experience managing research staff
--- Expertise and significant experience interacting with Institutional Review Boards for the protection of human subjects in research
--- Familiarity with data use agreements
--- Ability to review and edit manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals
--- Familiarity with human subjects regulatory requirements for clinical research

Supervision Provided:
This position reports to the Director of the CLEAR Center of the Radiology Department. Performs work under general guidance and supervision.

Work Environment:
--- Schedule is normally 8a to 5p, M-F but is not always fixed and workload does vary. The incumbent -s first responsibility is to complete tasks rather than keep to a fixed schedule. Flexibility in schedule and intensity of work is necessary.
